THE HEALING HANDS MOBILE ART PROGRAM AT CAPITAL HEALTH - HOPEWELL
Launched in 2014, it is my great pleasure to spearhead The Healing Hands Mobile Art Program under the direction of the Volunteer Services Department at Capital Health - Hopewell. Our team of volunteers, myself included, visit patients of all ages and illnesses with our art cart providing patients with creative opportunities to find comfort, expression and healing at bedside.
We [the artist volunteers] take our lead from pediatric through senior patients. Some people want to work independently; others prefer we initiate projects while others sit back and enjoy watching us create the visions they wish to see. Our volunteers, nurses and physicians have witnessed the joy that art brings – from the simple query: “Do you want to make art?” many patients respond with laughter. Some patients seemingly too feeble to hold a pencil quite miraculously sit up and immediately participate. Children who are despondent are often creating in minutes. Nurses have mentioned that pain medications drop during times of engagement. Due to the program’s success, the hospital system's Trenton location, Regional Medical Center, located in our New Jersey state capital, now offers this program at their facility.
